Now that you have launched your blog on the World Wide Web, you will want to start submitting your URL to web directories and blog directories. The two primary purposes to achieve here are the following. Building a reader base and get your URL listed in the search engines.
There are many free directories out there which is a good place to start submitting your blog to first. Some of these free directories require you to link back to them with a reciprocal link. Another good source is, pay-by-preview directories including general directories and blog directories.

I would suggest that you do a little research of which directories have Google PageRank and good Alexa rankings. While there are many out there that will argue this point, but submitting to directories which have (PR) and good Alexa ranking will assist you to gain popularity and web traffic. I will mention that good page content is more important than PageRank and Alexa traffic, but this is my opinion.

You can do a quick search in Google for free directory lists, directory lists and blog directory lists to get you started on your way. Installing the Alexa toolbar can be a good move if you are concerned about which sites are a better choice to market your products or services on. As a rule of thumb, the more web traffic the directory has, the better chances are that your blog is discovered.

Please note that free directories usually are pretty slow in processing your URL submission. Directories which are a pay-by-review are much faster in processing, usually 24 to 48 hours.
