Build Website Traffic and Backlinks by Sponsoring a Contest

Posted in Blogging Tips by squeaky @ May 4, 2008

If you are a website or blog owner, there a few things which you should be concerned about.

* Building website traffic
* Building backlinks
* Getting top rankings in the search engines to improve web traffic

While there are several ways to get web traffic and build backlinks that will improve your rankings in the search engines. But, in this article I will focus on one of them by sponsoring prizes for online contests.

As we surf the Internet daily there are thousands of contests going on throughout the World Wide Web. Many of these contests require prizes which are given away. For the most part running a contest and supplying the prizes can just be too much out of pocket expense to deal with, so the site owner looks for other sources to donate some of the prizes.

Now, this is where opportunity knocks. Some of the benefits are that you get listed as a contributor and receive a backlink to your website, which is very effective in gaining popularity in the search engines to get top rankings.

Many people will browse over the contest prizes and follow the link and that brings them to your website. It is a great opportunity to get people to your website to see what you are all about. If they don’t win the prize that you have donated, they may actually revisit your site and purchase the item.

Hosting your own contest and getting other to donate prizes is the most effective way to build web traffic and backlinks. But, if you aren’t in a position to run your own contest, then sponsoring prizes for other people’s contest is another way to build some backlinks and gain more web traffic.

Please note: The more closely the site is related usually delivers the best results….

    It is crazy how Google gives PR out to some and how it takes it away others. Squeaky’s Madmouse Blog was PR2 and made PR3. The Madmouse Web Directory was a PR4 and cut down to PR3. I still am working on figuring out what I can do to make it stronger, we’ll see what happens next update.

    Here is one that I think is funny. I put up a couple of blogs for a test to see what PR they would get. They are very close to being the same containing a Madmouse Network sponsored template, two posts on each and about the same number of backlinks. One got a PR1 and the other got a PR2.

    PR1 - http://www.411-brainiac.com/

    PR2 - http://www.starnewsblog.com/

    My idea is to wait till they get a PR3 and then run a contest and give them away for prizes….

    Again, thank you for your tips how to build traffic. Seems to me, you like an expert. You may have heard before about the so-called no follow attribute. What’s your opinion? This tag was first introduced by Google to cater for the comment spam. Should we use the same tag for our blog post?

    I get the sponsoring prizes thing, but don’t get the domain thing. Maybe I’m weird, but I would rather have a domain name that meant something to me and zero PR than a dofus domain name with a PR of 10.

    The no-follow tag I would use if I were selling text links and sitewide links. Google seem to have an attitude about them and many sites have lost pr because of that. As far as comments, if the comments aren’t spam there shouldn’t be an issues, but if you are concerned about passing pr, then I would use it. The best thing is to read the policy that Google has about such things, so you get the information first hand.

    Margaret, glad you got the sponsoring prizes part of my post. Having pagerank will actually help you rank higher in the search engines for your keyword terms.
